Martin Luther King Jr. Gateway Park Ribbon Cutting

MLK Gateway Park - Aerial Looking North Morning

At Powers & Sons Construction, we believe some projects are about more than construction — they are about preserving history, honoring legacy, and creating spaces that continue to inspire future generations. As the Construction Manager on the MLK Gateway Project in Indianapolis, our team was honored to help bring this meaningful vision to life.

Located within Martin Luther King Jr. Park, this transformational project further elevated one of the most historically significant sites in the nation — the place where Robert F. Kennedy delivered his historic speech on April 4, 1968, informing the crowd that Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated just hours earlier. His call for peace that evening has since been recognized as one of the most notable speeches in American history.

In 2025, the City of Indianapolis and Indy Parks and Recreation broke ground on the MLK Gateway Project to further honor the national significance of the site while creating an immersive experience that reflects the lives, impact, and intersecting legacies of both MLK and RFK.

A Project Designed to Tell a Story

The project transformed the park through intentional design elements that invite visitors to pause, reflect, and engage with history in a meaningful way.

Beginning at the southernmost point of the park, the revitalized space now includes a new historic plaza featuring etched glass lecterns, granite ring seating, enhanced lighting, walkways, landscaping improvements, and upgraded gathering spaces surrounding the existing Landmark for Peace Memorial monument.

New sidewalks guide visitors north toward a newly constructed pavilion featuring five illuminated interpretive etched-glass panels that walk visitors through the history and legacy of each decade of MLK and RFK’s lives.

One of the most visually striking aspects of the project is the pavilion itself. The sweeping arc and gradual angle of the structure required an extraordinary level of precision in both steel fabrication and limestone veneer installation. Two monoliths frame the entrance to the pavilion, intentionally aligned with the outstretched hands of MLK and RFK at the Landmark for Peace monument across the lawn — creating a powerful visual connection between the two leaders and the history they share.

A Community Celebration

The ribbon cutting ceremony brought together community members, project partners, local leaders, and stakeholders to celebrate the completion of a space rooted in history, reflection, and unity.

Throughout the event, speakers, including Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, reflected on the importance of preserving history while creating spaces that encourage dialogue, learning, and connection. The day carried a strong sense of pride, not only in the completion of the project itself, but in the lasting impact the space will continue to have for the future.

Honoring the Past While Inspiring the Future

The MLK Gateway Project represents the power of thoughtful construction to preserve stories, create connections, and strengthen communities.

For our team at Powers & Sons Construction, it was an honor to help bring this important vision to life and contribute to a space that will continue educating, inspiring, and impacting visitors for generations to come.
