LAKESIDE ALLIANCE HOSTS FIRST CAREER & TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FAIR

On Thursday, May 3rd at Olive Harvey College (10001 S. Woodlawn Avenue, Chicago, IL 60628) from 2:00 to 6:00PM, Lakeside Alliance will be holding the first of several career and training opportunities fairs to connect community members to construction job and training resources. These fairs are part of Lakeside Alliance’s ongoing community engagement to help both job seekers and businesses in Chicago’s communities.

Apprenticeship program representatives, workforce development agencies, training organizations, and several other agencies offering supportive services will be located at informational tables to provide attendees with information about each of their programs.

For individuals seeking to receive updates about career opportunities and events as the project progresses as well as those who need help with their online inquiry forms, Lakeside Alliance will have staff on hand to assist.

To increase the number of local, diverse talent on the West and South Sides able to work on the Obama Presidential Center, Lakeside Alliance is holding this fair early on in the construction planning process. In addition, Lakeside Alliance strives to develop a pipeline of diverse talent that will also then have the opportunity to work on other future projects around the city.

Kelly Powers Baria of the Lakeside Alliance explained how the joint venture plans to continue their career fairs; “The strategy is to start the massive outreach on the city’s South Side and work our way through the City College system to showcase each college’s unique features while engaging community-based organizations to share more about their transformative programs.”

The joint venture between Turner Construction Company, and the Presidential Partners consortium of Powers & Sons Construction, UJAMAA Construction, Brown & Momen, and Safeway Construction will ensure that diverse firms from the South Side will be in significant leadership positions in the construction of the Obama Presidential Center. Powers & Sons, UJAMAA, Brown & Momen and Safeway represent some of the most established and well-respected African-American owned construction firms in Chicago.

For the Obama Presidential Center, Lakeside Alliance is committed to exceeding industry standards and surpassing their own milestones by awarding as much as half of the expected $300 million + of subcontracts on the project to diverse suppliers, and to ensuring local residents from the project’s neighboring communities have job opportunities
