KELLY POWERS BARIA CO-CHAIRS 35TH ANNUAL BLACK CREATIVITY GALA

On January 27, 2018, the 35th annual Black Creativity Gala was held at the Museum of Science and Industry. This event was a celebration of the heritage, culture, and scientific contributions of African Americans.

Powers & Sons Construction’s Director of Business Development, Kelly Powers Baria, co-chaired the event with more than 800 guests who came out and raised funds to motivate young people in the science, technology, engineering, art, and medicine fields.

Through the evening attendees enjoyed over 100 original works of art from professional and amateur African-American artists from across the country, viewed the new Innovation Studio where students can hone their problem-solving and creative skills, enjoyed dinner and dancing with live musical entertainment, and interacted with the Museum of Science and Industry exhibits.

The event raised $429,000 to further MSI’s Black Creativity STEM programming. These funds will go to supporting tens of thousands of students, their teachers, and families in disadvantaged Chicago neighborhoods.

“Since that first little art show back in 1970, Black Creativity has grown to recognize all aspects of African-American innovation. … We are creating a future where the question ‘What if?’ is replaced by ‘What’s next?’” said co-chair Kelly Powers Baria on Black Creativity’s mission and its ever-increasing importance.
