On Friday, September 15, 2017, over 300 Chicago dignitaries, friends, business and community leaders joined the Powers & Sons family and team members at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois to celebrate the 50-year mark of Powers & Sons and their journey to success.
The night began with a cocktail hour where attendees could mingle, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drink cocktails, and enjoy a stroll through the decades of Powers & Sons construction projects.
The emcees for the evening, Dorothy Tucker, news anchor, CBS 2 Chicago and Demetrious Powers kicked off the event at 7 p.m. Followed by an invocation by Pastor Virgil Woods of First A.M.E. Church in Gary, Indiana.
Commentary remarks were given by Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board President, and Karen Freeman-Wilson, Mayor of Gary, Indiana. “Wherever you go in Gary, you see the handprint of Powers & Sons…” said Freeman-Wilson in her uplifting speech. She went on to thank the Powers & Sons family and team members for what they have done for the city and people of Gary.
“Entrepreneurs are so important in the Black community. They are important because they hire other Black people …providing much-needed jobs.” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle as she addressed the 300-person crowd congratulating the family and emphasizing the value of entrepreneurship.
In a video message, Don Thompson of Cleveland Avenue and former McDonald’s President and Chief Executive Officer congratulated the company and expressed his gratitude for the friendship and business endeavors he created with Mamon Powers, Jr. Leon Walker of DL3 Realty and Patricia Abrams from The Renaissance Collaborative, Inc. also gave additional client comments.
Claude Powers, President of Powers & Sons, presented Legacy Awards to Rixie McCarroll and Howard Johnson for their dedicated service and significant contributions to the company’s growth and development. “In the beginning days of Powers & Sons the office was composed of three people, my father, Howard Johnson, and Rixie McCarroll. They were the foundational members of our company,” stated Claude.
A special tribute to Mamon Powers, Jr., about the qualities of a great leader was presented by his children, Kelly Powers Baria, Director of Business Development, and Mamon Powers III, Vice President. The siblings also surprised their father by presenting a thoughtful video of some of a of Mamon’s closest colleagues and mentees. Each person in the video shared their thoughts of Mamon, personally and professionally.
Closing words were provided by Mamon Powers, Jr., Chairman and CEO, where he discussed his father and his journey with the company. He left us with the message, “I know that the Powers & Sons Team did not get here all alone. I am convinced that we have angels on each of our shoulders. Maybe it’s our mother on the left and our father on the right to help us along the way each and every day. I truly know that God had blessed us, because I am truly a witness and a product of the miracles.”
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed music provided by R & B singer Terisa Griffin and DJ Vince Adams. Attendees had the opportunity to dance, let loose, enjoy some Chicago themed snacks and celebrate 50 years.
The Powers & Sons 50th anniversary celebration was a night to remember. A big thanks to everyone who could come out and join us.
